The short version: your health information stays on your device.
- Your medications, doses, notes, photos and name are stored only on your device. They are never sent to us.
- There are no accounts. We don't ask for your email to use the App.
- We use a few services for anonymous usage analytics, purchases and feature requests. They never receive your medication names.
- We don't sell your personal information or use it for advertising.
1. Who we are
Pill Lock (the “App”) is developed and published by Chisato Technologies (“we”, “us” or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains what information is processed when you use the App on iPhone or iPad and when you visit this website, why it is processed, and the choices you have.
For the limited personal information we process ourselves or through our service providers, Chisato Technologies is the data controller. You can contact us at any time at support@chisato.io.
2. Information that stays on your device
The App is designed so that the information you enter about your health is stored locally on your device and is never sent to us. This includes:
- Medication details: names, dosages and units, colors and icons, notes, schedules, reminder settings, course end settings and stock quantities.
- Dose history: when doses were due and whether they were taken, skipped or snoozed.
- Photos you take or choose of your medication, its packaging or where you keep it.
- Your first name, if you choose to provide it, which is used only to personalize greetings in the App.
- Your answers to optional onboarding questions, such as why you use Pill Lock and how often you miss doses, except as described in Section 3.
- App blocking selections. When you choose apps or categories to lock, Apple's Screen Time framework gives the App only anonymous references to them. Neither the App nor we can see which apps you selected or how you use them.
We do not operate a database or cloud service that stores this information, and the App has no user accounts. Your device's own backups (for example, iCloud Backup or a computer backup) may include App data. Those backups are controlled by you and handled by Apple under its own privacy policy.
The App does not read from or write to Apple Health.
3. Information we collect
To run, improve and support the App, we collect a limited amount of information, mostly through the service providers described below. None of it includes your medication names, notes or photos, your first name, or the apps you choose to block.
a. Product analytics
We use Mixpanel to understand how people use the App, so we can find problems and improve it. The App sends events such as:
- which onboarding screens were viewed and whether onboarding was completed;
- how you heard about Pill Lock, if you answer that question;
- that a medication was created, with general attributes such as schedule type, dosage amount and unit, the number of reminders per dose, and whether photos were added (never the medication's name);
- that a dose was marked as taken, without any details about the medication;
- whether the App was opened from a reminder or from the app blocking screen;
- when the subscription screen is shown and when a purchase is made (product and offer);
- responses to rating prompts and update prompts.
Each event is associated with a random, anonymous identifier generated by the App and an indicator of whether you have Pill Lock Pro. Mixpanel also automatically records technical information, such as device model, operating system and app version, language, and session and app-open events. It derives an approximate location (country, region and city) from your IP address.
b. Purchases and subscriptions
Purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. We never receive your payment card details. We use RevenueCat to manage purchases and subscription status. RevenueCat receives transaction information from the App Store (such as product, price, currency, storefront and subscription status), the App's anonymous identifier, and technical information such as device type, operating system version and IP address. Where Apple makes it available, the App also shares an Apple Search Ads attribution token, so we can understand which advertising campaigns lead to downloads. This token does not identify you personally.
c. Feature requests
If you use the optional feature request board in Settings, the requests, comments and votes you submit, and any other information you choose to include, are processed by our provider WishKit together with the App's anonymous identifier.
d. App configuration checks
When the App opens, it contacts our server to check whether an update is required. The request includes the App version, the anonymous identifier and whether you have Pill Lock Pro. Our hosting provider processes your IP address and standard request information in server logs. We do not store this information in a database.
e. Support communications
If you contact us, we receive your email address, the contents of your message and anything you choose to attach. We use this only to respond to you and improve our support.
f. Information from Apple
If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device settings, Apple may give us crash reports and aggregated usage statistics. Apple also provides us with aggregated App Store sales and download reports. We do not receive your Apple Account details.
g. This website
This website does not use cookies or advertising. Our hosting provider, Vercel, processes standard technical information, such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver the site and keep it secure.
We use Vercel Web Analytics to count visits to this website: which pages are viewed, the referring website, and general information such as country, browser, operating system and device type. It does not use cookies and does not identify you across websites. Visitors are distinguished only by a hash of the incoming request that changes every day.
4. Device permissions
The App asks for the following permissions only when a feature needs them. Each is optional and can be changed at any time in your device's Settings, although some features will not work without them.
- Notifications and Critical Alerts, to deliver dose reminders, including reminders that can sound in silent mode or during a Focus if you enable them.
- Screen Time (Family Controls), to lock the apps you choose at dose time. Apple handles your app selections privately and does not share them with us.
- Camera and Photos, to take or choose photos of your medication, and to save those photos to your library if you ask the App to.
The App does not use Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA) and does not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies.
5. How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- provide the App's features, including reminders, app blocking and purchases;
- understand how the App is used, fix problems, and improve features and onboarding;
- measure the effectiveness of our App Store marketing;
- respond to support requests and feature requests;
- keep the App, this website and our services secure and prevent abuse; and
- comply with legal obligations, such as tax and accounting requirements.
We do not use your information to provide medical advice, to build health profiles about you, or to target advertising to you.
Legal bases (EEA, UK and Switzerland). Where data protection laws require a legal basis, we rely on: performance of our contract with you, to provide the App and process purchases; our legitimate interests in understanding and improving the App, measuring marketing, providing support and keeping our services secure, balanced against your rights; your consent, where we ask for it (for example, device permissions); and compliance with legal obligations.
6. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share information only:
- With service providers that process it on our behalf and under our instructions: Mixpanel (product analytics), RevenueCat (purchase management), WishKit (feature requests), Vercel (website hosting and website analytics), and our server hosting provider. Apple processes App Store purchases and device features under its own terms.
- For legal reasons, if we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law or needed to protect the rights, safety or property of our users, ourselves or others.
- In a business transfer, such as a merger, acquisition or sale of assets. This Privacy Policy would continue to apply to your information.
7. International transfers
Our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries whose data protection laws may differ from those where you live. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an applicable adequacy framework.
8. Data retention
- On-device data stays on your device until you edit or delete it in the App, or delete the App.
- Analytics data is kept only as long as needed to understand and improve the App, after which it is deleted or anonymized.
- Purchase records are kept as long as needed to provide your purchase and to meet legal, tax and accounting obligations.
- Support emails are kept as long as needed to resolve your request and for a reasonable period afterwards.
- Server logs are kept for a short period by our hosting providers for security and troubleshooting.
9. Your choices and rights
On your device. You can edit or delete any medication, dose or photo in the App at any time. Deleting the App removes all of its data from your device. You can turn off notifications, Critical Alerts, Screen Time access, camera and photo access in your device's Settings.
Your rights. Depending on where you live (including the EEA, UK, Switzerland, California and other US states), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal information, to restrict or object to certain processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
To make a request, email support@chisato.io. Because the App has no accounts and we do not collect your name or contact details through it, we may need your help to locate information related to you, for example details of an App Store purchase. We will respond within the time required by applicable law.
If you are in the EEA, UK or Switzerland, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
10. Security
Information on your device is protected by iOS security features, including device encryption when you use a passcode. Information sent to our service providers is transmitted over encrypted connections. We use reasonable safeguards and choose providers with strong security practices, but no method of storage or transmission is completely secure.
11. Children
The App is not intended for children under 13, or the higher minimum age required in their country, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@chisato.io and we will delete it.
12. Not medical advice
Pill Lock is a reminder and habit tool. It is not a medical device and does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. The medication information shown in the App is entered by you and is not reviewed by healthcare professionals. See our Terms of Use for details.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example when we add features or change service providers. We will post the updated version on this page and update the “Last updated” date. If we make significant changes, we will give additional notice where appropriate, for example in the App.
14. Contact us
If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy or how we handle information, contact Chisato Technologies at support@chisato.io or visit chisato.io.
